How to pick a perfect hunting dog according to DU, is to seek an experienced breeder with proven blood lines.   The pup should have positive generic traits, when purchasing a pup not just because of confirmation, color, titles or size.

The pups are generally purchased when they are around 7 to 8 weeks, it shouldn’t be too small or large size, with a medium size is what most hunters want, you want one that has good eye a puppy that likes people and is bold and curious, watch for how active or sleepy the pups are, you don’t want one that’s sleepy and not excited to see you, the pups   soundness and health, should be the goal of your purchase.

There are some puppies that may be home sick at first, so spend as much time as possible with the pup when you’re in the yard, allowing them to run around and play with you

No dog is going to be perfect, so don’t overdo it as something as simple as raising your voice or hollering at them can really mess up a training session.  My last dog was a pointing Lab, I taught him to sit and stay and once I taught him to (GO and GO GET THEM), they’re a special breed as you have the labs traits to point, locate and retrieve birds and the Pointers ability to hold tight on a bird, and not spook it.

All of my dogs were registered through the American Kennel Club, that gives you the family lines of the dog and if you plan on breeding the dog, the sale price would be higher.

Hunting behind a well-trained dog, makes the hunting experience all the better.

You’ll want to pick your puppy according to what you plan on hunting.  Not by its looks and eagerness.

Choose a good bloodline, as some of the dogs’ traits will carry on to the puppy you want to hunt with.
