The annual PDR deer hunt for youth with disabilities offers an expenses-paid weekend camp designed to encourage participation, promote responsibility, and enhance self-confidence with adolescents in the special needs community.
Last weekend, nine participants with special needs joined the PDR Hunt, observing Whitetail deer from their stands during a foggy morning. With guidance from adult mentors, five successfully harvested deer during the 2025 event, while all nine engaged in the activity and shared a sense of accomplishment. Kolby, a participant from Volin, South Dakota, remarked on how the experience impacted him: “Being able to go on a big deal like a deer hunt makes me feel good about myself.” He expressed that the opportunity made him feel more confident.
The PDR Hunt is currently accepting applications for its 2026 event, open to youth aged 12 to 18 with any disability. Additional information and the application form are available at PDRyouthhunt.com or by contacting PDR founder Dean Rasmussen at 605-233-0331.
