Once the heat of summer arrives, all species of fish will need to change in order to survive.
Walleyes, will need to make the biggest change in order to find food, cooler water and temperatures to survive.
Feeding becomes one of the most important things, as the baitfish they feed on will be on the move, with the walleyes right behind them.
Baitfish feed on zooplankton and plankton, which drifts in the water.
When the wind blows, the plankton and the food source of younger fish will be carried with the wind, blowing into the downwind shoreline, with the baitfish moving with it into shallower water to feed.
The wind coming against the shoreline, will wash sand, mud and other debris from the shore, creating a mudline.
This allows the walleyes with their light sensitive eyes to move in under the mudline, where the sunlight can’t penetrate, to feed.
Once water temperatures rise, walleyes will need to move deeper, with flooded trees making excellent locations to look for them.
Anglers trolling crankbaits at the depth the walleyes are holding have an excellent opportunity to take these fish during the heat of summer!
